Positive Steps was formed in January 1997 by three pioneering women in order to help meet the needs of all women from within the Cookstown District Council Area. Since then the Women's Group has grown from strength to strength. Positive Steps Community Centre offers a variety of courses to those who live within the local Cookstown District Area and surrounding areas. Although we are a women's group most of our courses are open to men from the area as well. We also provide Crèche facilities for children 0-4 years and many of our courses include a childcare and a travel allowance.
Street Angel Volunteer
Access NI check required
Our vision is to form a team of volunteers to assist and protect those using the town centre on a Saturday night from 11pm - 2am. Cookstown Street Angels would provide an on-street facility and integrated safety net service for individuals in need. The needs of those individuals may be the result of homelessness in its various forms, intoxication, substance abuse and/or any other issue, which has caused personal distress or has the potential to cause physical harm to themselves or others. Teams of trained volunteers will patrol the streets of Cookstown wearing identifiable high visible vests and ID cards. They will aim to protect and help socialisers to keep safe and will also aim to reduce alcohol related disorderly behaviour and assaults in the town.
Street Angels will have a safe base for ladies to wait for safe transport home, get a cup of tea or coffee or just a chat. Flip flops and tinfoil blankets will also be distributed to those who require them and basic first aid will also be administered from the base. Volunteers will receive first aid, conflict management and suicide awareness training, to equip them with the skills needed to fulfil their duties.
We require at least 16 volunteers before this project can operate, so that each Street Angel is only required to volunteer for a few hours, one Saturday night per month. Please consider this brilliant opportunity to really make a difference in Cookstown, and make it a safer, more enjoyable place to be on a Saturday night!
Charity Shop Volunteers
The charity shop appropriately named “New Hope” encompasses the work of the centre. The shop opens Monday to Friday 10.00am – 2.00pm and we need volunteers to help with sorting of merchandise, pricing and serving customers.
